joschin a battle of POM ball versus steel ball bearing... the steel... lost...13:41
joschhttps://mister-muffin.de/p/3Xb1.jpg13:41
- elektron (QUIT: Ping timeout: 264 seconds) (~elektron@apoc.halo.nu)13:41
joschthis is four years of trackball usage13:41
+ elektron (~elektron@apoc.halo.nu)13:43
gordon1well, not entirely a surprise13:43
+ bremner (~bremner@notmuch/developer/bremner)13:43
gordon1it is probably because of little bits of abrasives that could just get there from around the environment13:43
joschMy environment kills steel. It already kills my copper heatsink. :D13:44
gordon1that's why i sort of want to put teflon balls instead of steel and keep them free-spinning (and also put some sort of protective glass between cup and a sensor in case those would drop down)13:47
joschgordon1: you were also working on an updated trackball lid with magnets, no?13:50
gordon1that was initial idea but now just playing around with reform i don't think it is warranted, especially because in a simple mod that i did it is extremely hard to remove, requiring a tool to pry it open, and the whole idea was to make it work with as little tools as possible13:52
gordon1but because you sorta need still a keycap remover to access it, maybe i will think of something that could use it instead13:53
joschgordon1: if i remember correctly you also made the findings of increasing the viewing cone for the sensor to improve tracking -- how did that develop since then?13:56
gordon1yes, after that i went into testing differntly sized SiN balls with inconclusive results13:57
gordon1i also made a parametric cup that allows you to easily set the ball diameter and sensor offset and distance13:58
gordon1https://source.mnt.re/gordon/sin-trackball-parts13:58
gordon1but still cannot make SiN ball to work reliably13:59
joschhrm... bummer :/14:00
joschgordon1: did you experiment with the distance between ball and sensor?14:00
gordon1yes, exactly, i thought it was the most reliable way to make it work, and it works with my biggest SiN ball (but then it won't fit inside the reform) but when i tried that with smaller (24mm, 22.225mm, 20mm) balls - none of them worked, so still not sure what's going on14:02
gordon1cup that works with 25mm sin ball btw works fine with zirconium oxide and teflon balls as well, so there is definitely something that i'm missinng here, but not sure what14:04

mhoyejosch: the Ploopy people have inserts so the ball rides on bearings. https://ploopy.co/nano-trackball/15:29
mhoyeAt some point I need to get around to printing a cup for the Reform with the same cutouts and try it.15:32
mhoyeCan I ask, have there been any updates or the trackball firmware ?15:32

grimmwareminute: charger board and rcore arrived today - I've just fit the charger board with my stupid enormous batteries given that theh old ones are probably pretty unhealthy by this point18:03
grimmwareI got over my worries about the tight fit when I realised it was mostly tight because of some of the cables I'd run through the hinge, there's also a place down the road that does laser cutting so I figured I could probably just give it a transparent base so I can keep an eye on it!18:04
grimmwareI'll install the rcore tomorrow but I'm really just glad to have my pocket back in action and nominally portable!18:05
grimmwarecharging looks *much* healthier but that's also to be expected from new batteries18:10
grimmwareI have also discovered a terrible thing - that you can crimp cables for a jst connector using a female dupont crimp, some insulation tape and a pair of tweezers + pliers for "fine tuning"18:12
grimmwareI do not recommend the experience, I should have just soldered some new wires to the battery with the jst already attached but apparently I decided on a course of action I was determined to stick withh18:12
