grimmwareugh, looks like I have screen damage :(12:54
grimmwareno idea how that happened.12:54

fricklerso ... gnome is showing me a popup message that the gnome project needs support ... is this what debian has come to allow now? (or is this something some reform tooling does?)14:48
minutefrickler: i had a similar knee-jerk reaction at first but then i was like, gnome is a nonprofit, it's ok for them to ask for a donation, other software does it as well... it's perhaps just an unusual format14:55
minutefor example, vim asks to support a specific cause each time it's started (has since forever)14:56
minutefirefox normally has built in ads for amazon, otto (in germany) and others which we disable using prefs14:57
minutebut it still uses google search by default which then shows you ads etc etc14:57
minutei hope we'll be profitable one day so i can regularly donate to the most important foss projects14:59
minutein the end, we're benefiting immensely from gnome, so it would feel wrong for me to patch out their donation pledge... which they probably wouldn't put there if it wasn't needed15:01
kop316frickler: org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.housekeeping donation-reminder-enabled controls it, I originally saw it on my phone15:02
minuteit's normally only shown once15:02
minuteor not?15:02
kop316minute: IIRC it shows every few months, I can look for the MR again15:03
minutekop316: hm15:03
fricklerI saw it for the first time today, can't tell yet. and yes, I do understand the need, but then what about the 100s of other projects that are needed to run gnome and display that ad?15:04
fricklerif everyone did that, I maybe wouldn't want to run debian any longer, that's the concern I have with this15:06
kop316my personal opinion: making it a notification is in poor taste, and not every app can do this (e.g. backend libs). I can understand if it's in the about page and there's a link there (I do that in some of my apps), but if GNOME is allowed to do this, what about making a notification for my apps to donate to me?15:06
kop316(I think frickler is bringing the same concern)15:07
kop316But regardless, this is a default in Debian. I think a good place to discuss if Debian should suppress it is in a Debian Bug15:08
minutei see. yeah, the location/format is questionable, as i said15:08
kop316Fair, sorry I didn't catch that part!15:08
fricklerkop316: yes, I'd agree with your wording. and I agree that this discussion belong to the debian, but that community is too large for me and here is such a nice cosy corner ;)15:10
+ chomwitt (~chomwitt@2a02:85f:9a5f:900:1ac0:4dff:fedb:a3f1)15:10
kop316frickler: it's pretty easy to file a bug actually! And I already vented about this in the Mobian space, which is why my reaction is a bit more muted (it wasn't when I got it on my phone)15:11
kop316https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/commit/c43f6b8c4dddead23b3939943357e8faf185216a here's the commit that added it15:12
fricklerkop316: thx for the pointer. I'm not sure yet whether I've vented enough already for now. maybe in 6 months then ...  ;)15:15

joschfrickler: debian does not forbid donation pop-ups. It is up to the maintainer whether they accept them or patch them out.22:58
joschkop316: if your app in debian displays this pop-up, the maintainer of your software in debian is allowed to leave that in. Gnome is far from being the only software with such a donation pop-up.23:00
joschfrickler, kop316: if you dislike it (i agree) then please open a bug in the Debian BTS for it. If enough people complain, then the gnome team might reconsider.23:01
joschseems you can disable it by setting donation-reminder-enabled org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.housekeeping to false23:05
joschso since it can be disabled forever easily, i think any discussion would only be about whether it should be enabled by default or not23:09
joschAnd since it can be disabled easily i think i'd leave it in. Those who hate it can just disable it.23:10
kop316josch: yeah that's why I didn't file a bug, if I can disable it that'sfine23:12
joschone of the gnome main maintainers pointed out that the gnome foundation is in a critical financial situation23:17
joschand that's why the donation nag will not be removed by them23:18
