minutegot displayport alt mode to work on rk3588 pocket reform w/mainboard 2.0 cc ch https://mastodon.social/@mntmn/11637144629997931500:32
joschminute: stephano confirmed that the a311d u-boot issue is fixed. I can release a new reform-tools version with the fix but was wondering whether you would like to fix the apiv3 checksumming commit before I cut a new commit?00:33
josch*before I cut a new release00:37
johlWorking displayport on the pocket reform mainboard 2.0 makes me ridiculously happy00:50
joschi have neither hdmi nor display port devices at home -- honest question: is there any advantage of display port other than "i no longer have to connect a second cable"?00:53
f_josch: my main monitor is DP-first00:55
f_I know of one monitor where HDMI on it is capped to 3440x1440@100Hz while DP can go up to 165Hz00:56
joschi'm probably not the target audience -- my videos are 25 fps maximum XD00:57
kfxjosch: it's more "I no longer have to connect a monitor cable and a usb mic and a usb webcam and a usb ethernet dongle and a power cable and a keyboard and a mouse"01:14
joschkfx: is not everything in your list except for the monitor connected via usb so you would just connect a usb hub via one cable and the display via the hdmi cable to the pocket?01:16
kfxno, it's all plugged into the monitor.01:18
joschno i mean without display port alt mode: my understanding is that right now you have to connect two cables to your pocket: one for hdmi and one with the usb hub which has all devices connected and powers it. And I read several people saying that they would really like it if they only had to connect *one* cable to their pocket instead of two.01:19
kfxI mean sure01:20
kfxbut there are even monitors out there that only connect over usb-c01:21
kfxand the argument that "why bother, just use two cables" doesn't really have a logical conclusion01:21
kfxwhy have a pointing device built in?  why build in a keyboard?  just plug one in01:21
kfxetc01:21
joschokay, i see01:22
kfxanother thing displayport is good at is daisy chaining01:22
kfxnot sure this applies to the pocket reform, but there are setups where one monitor is plugged (via usb-c) into another monitor01:22
kfxand then its' just one cable for two displays plus all the crap one might plug into them01:23
joschi probably have to first experience the future myself and that might then convince me :)01:23
kfxit's also about living in the crappy world of the Rest Of Computing01:23
kfxmy work laptop is garbage and *only* has two USB-C ports01:24
kfxand one of them is permanently occupied by a yubikey01:24
kfxso I pretty much have no choice but to arrange matters for one-cable display01:24
kfxI can do that with a docking station, sure, or I can plug everything into the monitor and use its built-in kvm 01:25
joschi also have a work laptop but it is so "garbage" that its intel chip is barely faster than the rk3588 XD01:25
josch(so no usb-c at all because too old)01:25
kfxmy work laptop is an apple product, sadly01:25
kfxfirst time I've used anything but linux, bsd, or plan 9 in something like fifteen years01:26
kfxit's *terrible*01:26
kfxapple went from being a computer company I didn't really care about to an organization I strongly disrespect01:26
kfxanyway their whole ... ecosystem? ... of stuff is based around usb-c01:27

Guest11hello all. just got my new mnt reform laptop! i have a few questions18:07
Guest11first, what is the name of the terminal irc client used by reform-chat? i am having trouble figuring out how to use it18:08
+ wakest_ (b9de55a967@2001:bc8:1210:2cd8::6b5)18:09
joschGuest11: it's ircii18:09
- Guest11 (QUIT: Client Quit) (~Guest11@c-68-43-179-233.hsd1.mi.comcast.net)18:10
reform523ok thanks much18:10
joschbut i think it's just an emergency super minimal client -- much better and more user friendly clients for irc are available in the archive18:10
+ Guest11 (~Guest11@c-68-43-179-233.hsd1.mi.comcast.net)18:10

joschi meant in the Debian package archive18:11

reform523Ah i see, that's a good tip. i'll check that one out.18:12

[tj]minute: ouch that’s pretty painful.21:25
jfredre: pocket keyboard crashing repeatedly, if it's the same issue I've been having it still feels like something to do with the cabling21:28
jfredthe symptoms sound similar, and anecdotally I think I've had it happen less since I opened it up and reseated the keyboard connectors on each end21:29
jfredthere's still a narrow range of hinge positions where the keyboard will likely reset if I open it to that point21:30
+ ktallett (~ktallett@2a06:5902:4433:b300:f7cf:e72a:a699:29f4)21:56
joschjfred: i've also had problems with my keyboard depending on my hinge position and indeed the connection of the usb cable to the keyboard was the culprit -- it wasn't plugged in fully22:14
+ siviq (~siviq@user/siviq)22:15
wickedshelljosch: jfred same on the keyboard. Interestingly I have a fair amount of experience with JST type connectors and it seemed to be fully seated (at least the housing) I'm suspicious the pins may have gotten pulled out of the housing a bit. But that was awhile ago and it's been fine since then.22:16
