minutestephano: a few days ago we had a pocket reform in QA that had a slightly flickery backlight, and the fix was exchanging the flex adapter that's on the display which contains a boost circuit for the backlight01:15
minutestephano: you can try reseating that flex cable salad, and if it doesn't get better, mnt support can mail you a replacement adapter01:16
stephanothanks minute, i'll give it a try. confirmed it was not the kernel, just happened to start flickering the same day I upgraded. also confirmed it flickers in both sway and gnome.01:29

lidstahHi all, just opened a support ticket, the screen glitches here in my office (upstairs, 30°C room temperature) are quite worse than downstairs: 10:13

lidstahwell, reseated the display port, screen side - if only all laptops were as easy to disassemble and reassemble :)11:47
lidstahat least, I've done some training to replace the screen :D11:48
lidstahwell yep, no change, still glitches. Did what I could I guess :)11:49
minutelidstah: ahh sorry you were bit by this issue... we'll replace your screen12:16
lidstahminute: no problem, and it's easy to replace, and a good occasion to train myself at repairing the reform12:17
lidstahI've already opened a ticket, don't worry :)12:17

minutelidstah: awesome :D it's one of the tricker parts of the laptop14:28
minutelidstah: the thing is, i'm p. sure the displays that exhibit this issue are not even broken. we have a hdmi test adapter where this doesn't happen. it might be timing or power related in the end14:29
lidstahminute: yeah, this behavior appears when room temp is >25°C here and worsen with warmer temperature14:31
lidstahthat's quite strange14:31
lidstahI'm pretty sure tomorrow at engineering school #2 I won't have problems because it's climatised14:32

ankohey, im trying to use the sim card slot on my mnt pocket reform. i put the sim in, added my user to dialout, went through the networkmanager setup wizard for mobile broadband. but modem manager gui says it cant see any devices. am i missing something? 14:37
+ mjw (~mjw@gnu.wildebeest.org)14:43
minutelidstah: very interesting that it's temp related. maybe the temp decreases filter/AC coupling capacitor performance14:45
lidstahyeah, it's really hot here since the end of last week14:45
lidstah~34-35°C peak14:46
lidstahthus my office is really warm, and the home downstairs, although way fresher, is still around 25°C14:46
lidstahand I didn't saw glitches when we had normal temps for the season14:46
minutewhat i really miss in gnome is detailled modeline and color depth control14:47
minutein sway one can play with the display modeline using swaymsg at least14:48
minute(i'm curious if blanking and pixel clock affect this glitch or not)14:48

joschminute: are you upgrading your system via the gnome upgrading interface? Apparently it now wants to remove flash-kernel, making the system unbootable: https://community.mnt.re/t/anybody-else-having-issues-with-a-failed-boot-working-now-gnome-software-forced-dracut-to-install/4387/1015:42
aloo_shuanko: I'm more familiar with general troubleshooting than with mnt in particular, my next steps would be trying lspci and lsusb to see if the device is present there15:42
joschSvp: i tried out the magnet coupling you recommended to me on my trip to berlin this weekend and they work soooooo much better than the ones i had before -- thank you for the tip!15:44
aloo_shunext, I'd want to know if the kernel modules are loaded, with lsmod. to find out what I'm looking for, I'd need the modem's chipset, either from documentation, or searching online with the vendor:product key from listing the bus devices15:46

siviqlidstah I'm following your flickering screen issue with curiosity. Since you found the flicker happens above certain ambient temperatures, I have a proposal for you to test. Next time it starts flicker, can you remove the screen from the bezel, leave it cool for a bit. Then boot the system and observe, if the screen will exhibit the same problem?17:03
siviqMetal covers do expand and might be causing the issue, if the screen has tight fit. My 50 cents.17:03

lidstahalmost 35°C in my office upstairs :') hopefully I have a nice fan (and alot of water :D)19:08
- siviq (QUIT: Quit: Client closed) (~siviq@user/siviq)19:18
lidstahdownstairs it's around 26°C and there's way less glitches. minute take on this is that heat might decrease a filtering/decoupling capacitor effectiveness, and indeed it looks like noise (from what I recall of my physics lessons... 25 years ago :D) and another funny behavior is that more heat = more glitches and not only on the right side of the screen, but near the middle too.19:28
lidstahI should really (re)learn me some modern electronics and take some soldering training (and also, I should really take the time to go consult an ophthalmologist and get me some glasses because presbyopia is kicking in (at 47 years old, that's normal)19:31
lidstahhopefully I have a good magnifying glass in my office :')19:32

termoswould a future quasar module be able to use the ram from the reform next aka 200-pin sodimm?19:59
joschtermos: the ram of the SoMs is soldered on. You cannot upgrade your ram using the sodimm modules you are used to from x86 machines.20:05
termoshm ok so it’s one SoC, because on the ram/cpu section of crowdsupply it says «Modular 200-pin SODIMM, reuse/exchange modules from classic MNT Reform and MNT Pocket Reform»20:17

termosso its modular on the rockchip but not on the qualcomms?20:18
+ potash (~potash@user/foghorn)20:45
joschtermos: the connector is an sodimm connector. The module with cpu and ram and everything on it gets plugged into that connector to connect the SoM to the mainboard with the remaining peripherals.20:46
joschtermos: into that connector you can plug different modules from other MNT machines, like the LS1028A, imx8mq, imx8m+, a311d, rk3588, qcs6490...20:47
joschminute: maybe mentioning that it's an SODIMM connector confuses readers into believing it's a slot for RAM modules20:52
